Bi-Fuel Kohler Generators

Bi-fuel Kohler Generators

Kohler is a leading global generator brand. Its generators have diverse applications, from residential backup power to commercial and large-scale industrial applications. Kohler generators come in various sizes and types and use different fuels.

Types of Kohler generators

  • Diesel generators: Kohler’s diesel generators are renowned for their reliability, fuel efficiency, and long run times and range in size from 10kW to 4 MW.
  • Gas generators: Kohler gas generators are designed for residential, commercial, and industrial applications. They run on natural gas, propane, or biogas.
  • Bi-fuel generators: Kohler produces efficient bi-fuel generators that run on CNG, propane, methane, or wellhead gas alongside diesel. Bi-fuel generators offer improved fuel efficiency and reduced carbon emissions compared to traditional diesel-only generators.

Applications

  • Residential backup power: Kohler generators provide reliable backup power in the residential setting during power outages.
  • Commercial backup power: Kohler generators ensure uninterrupted power to essential systems in hospitals, data centers, and other critical commercial facilities.
  • Industrial power generation: Kohler generators have a diverse range of industrial applications, including mining, oil and gas, and construction.
  • Marine power generation: Kohler’s marine generators power boats and ships and can provide reliable backup power during outages.

Bi-fuel Kohler Generators

Bi-fuel Kohler generators run on a combination of diesel and natural gas (or other gaseous fuel) to deliver exceptional power, reliability, and improved fuel efficiency. Kohler offers bi-fuel generators in various sizes to power different residential, commercial, and industrial applications.

Customers with an existing Kohler diesel generator can retrofit it for bi-fuel operation. Retrofitting a Kohler diesel generator to bi-fuel operation entails installing a natural gas regulator, a mixer, and a control system to manage the fuel supply. The retrofitting process depends on the size, age, and application of the generator but does not require internal engine modification or changes to the OEM fuel controller system. Although no specialty tools are required, hiring a professional to retrofit a Kohler diesel-only generator is best.

Bi-fuel Kohler & OptiBlend®

OptiBlend® conversion kits ensure seamless retrofitting of existing diesel generators to enable bi-fuel operation. The kits are compatible with Kohler constant speed, fixed generators with a 200kW to 200kW power output.

Here are three example use cases of Kohler + OptiBlend converter kits:

  • Medical center: A medical center in Maimi, Florida, used an OptiBlend converter kit to convert its Kohler 500RE0ZJB generator to bi-fuel. The upgrade ensures a reliable backup power supply and the security of an on-site fuel source whenever natural disasters strike. The retrofitted bi-fuel generator achieves a 20% to 70% fuel replacement.
  • Apartment complex: An apartment building retrofitted its Kohler KD1000kW genset with an OptiBlend® converter kit to provide a reliable power backup during emergencies and power failure. It achieves a 9% to 65% fuel substitution range.
  • Humane Society: The Humane Society in Florida retrofitted its Kohler 500REOZJB genset with OptiBlend® to ensure a reliable backup power system during power outages. Switching to a bi-fuel system creates a more secure facility for animals, employees, and customers. The retrofitted genset achieves fuel replacement of 5% to 60%.
